A picnic to remember: Connecting communities with HAWA MSC
Tuesday, August 19, 2025
We joined HAWA Multicultural Services for a picnic in Hertfordshire with refugee and asylum-seeking families. The event gave people space to meet others, ask questions, and feel part of something shared. It reflects our continued work with community partners to support those rebuilding their lives in the UK.
Last month, Arhag joined forces with HAWA Multicultural Services to host a community picnic for asylum seekers and refugees living in and around Hertfordshire.
The event took place at a local park on a sunny Friday afternoon and offered a simple but meaningful space for people to come together, share food, and relax with their families. There were games for children, free henna, and plenty of friendly conversations throughout the day.

Many of those who came along were attending their first local event. For others, it was a chance to reconnect with one another and feel part of something shared.
Staff from both Arhag and HAWA were on hand to offer support and answer questions about housing, health, and other local services. The atmosphere was calm and welcoming, and the event helped build connections that will continue beyond the day itself.
Rushna Miah, Co-founder at HAWA, said:
“This picnic was a way to bring people together in a space where they felt welcome. It gave families a chance to relax, talk and feel part of the wider community.”
Pamela Newman, Executive Director of Customer Services at Arhag, said:
“We know how important these moments are for people building a life in a new place. Being able to sit together, speak freely, and enjoy the day is something many of us take for granted. We are proud to support events like this.”

Chris Harris, Arhag CEO, said:
"Thank you to HAWA for co-hosting the picnic and to everyone who joined us. It reminded us that important things often happen in quiet moments. When we share food, spend time and show up for each other, we build stronger communities."
We will keep working with others to create spaces where people feel seen, heard and part of something.
