As Ramadan 2025 unfolds, Arhag continues its vital support for the Iftar Project, a partnership with HAWA Multicultural Services (HAWA MCS), which serves refugees and migrants in the St Albans area. Building on the success of last year’s initiative, this collaboration ensures that vulnerable Muslims facing food insecurity during the holy month have access to culturally appropriate meals.

A meaningful partnership

HAWA MCS, established in 2008, is dedicated to supporting ethnically diverse communities in Hertfordshire. The organisation’s efforts have helped countless individuals, particularly refugees and asylum seekers, navigate their new lives in the UK. Their work has earned them widespread recognition, including a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2022 2025, as well as the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire Award in 2025. HAWA’s initiatives focus on empowerment, education, and integration, with a strong emphasis on building community connections.

The Iftar Project is a key element of HAWA MCS's Ramadan activities, providing essential meals for Iftar to those in need. With the ongoing economic challenges and the cost-of-living crisis, many refugees and migrants find it increasingly difficult to access food during Ramadan. Arhag’s partnership with HAWA MCS is critical in addressing this issue, offering not only funding but also a commitment to helping vulnerable communities celebrate Eid with dignity.

Reflecting on 2024 success

In 2024, Arhag’s contributions played a significant role in the success of the Iftar Project, particularly in funding meals for HAWA MCS’s Eid Day celebrations. The meals provided a moment of respite and joy for many, bringing together families and individuals who may otherwise have struggled to break their fasts in the traditional way.

One of the individuals supported by the programme shared, “I would like to thank HAWA MCS for providing not only me and my family but other Muslim families here with hot meals to break our fasts and food on Eid day. This kindness, especially during Ramadan, means so much to us”. Such testimonials highlight the importance of the initiative and the tangible difference it makes in the lives of those it serves.

The role of Arhag’s support

Chris Harris, Chief Executive of Arhag, emphasised the importance of the ongoing partnership. “We are proud to continue our support for HAWA MCS and the Iftar Project. This collaboration allows us to contribute meaningfully to the lives of refugees and migrants during Ramadan, a time when food insecurity can make it difficult to observe the fast. Our support for Eid Day celebrations is just one way we are fulfilling our social responsibility and helping to foster inclusion in the community.”

Rushna Miah, co-founder of HAWA MCS, also praised Arhag’s involvement: “The support from Arhag is invaluable to our work. Thanks to their sponsorship, we are able to provide meals and create a space for vulnerable Muslims to come together and celebrate Eid. This partnership has truly made a difference in the lives of so many families.”

Looking ahead: ongoing commitment

The success of the Iftar Project in 2024 has strengthened the resolve of both HAWA MCS and Arhag to continue their work in 2025 and beyond. The collaboration not only addresses immediate food needs but also builds long-term relationships between community groups and local organisations.

In addition to the Iftar Project, HAWA MCS continues to offer vital support to refugees and migrants through a range of community-building initiatives. These include regular meetings, fitness classes, and social events, all aimed at helping individuals settle into their new communities and form lasting connections.
