Arhag welcomes two new board members

Arhag has this month added two new board members to its team. Charmain Humphrey and Nick Whitaker join us with a shared commitment to our mission of providing high-quality housing and support services for migrants and refugees. Their diverse expertise and personal connections to our work will strengthen our ability to make a meaningful impact in the communities we serve.

Chris Harris, Arhag’s Chief Executive, said: “I’m delighted to welcome both Nick and Charmain to the board – Nick as a non-executive member, and Charmain as a resident representative. Their unique experiences, knowledge, and passion for supporting our residents make them exceptional additions to the team. With their input, we’ll continue to grow as an organisation and deliver on our mission to empower our tenants and build inclusive, thriving communities.

Read on to learn more about our newest board members and what they bring to Arhag.

Charmain Humphrey

Arhag is proud to welcome Charmain Humphrey as our latest resident board member. Charmain is deeply rooted in the East London community, with a rich professional background and personal connection to Arhag’s mission.

Charmain currently works as the Participation Manager at Immediate Theatre, where she provides pastoral care and ensures families can access the wide range of services available. Her dedication to supporting others and improving access to vital resources is something she will carry into her role at Arhag.

In addition to her professional work, Charmain has spent eleven years serving on Arhag’s Resident Scrutiny Panel. This experience has given her valuable insight into the challenges residents face and the importance of clear communication between tenants and the organisation.

As an Arhag resident herself, Charmain is passionate about making her community a better place. She wants to ensure tenants feel proud of where they live and safe in their homes. This personal connection runs deep -- Charmain’s father grew up in the same block of flats where she currently lives, and her parents were married in the church next door.

Charmain said, “I look forward to bringing residents’ voices to this role. My experience as both an Arhag resident and member of the scrutiny panel means I’m well-positioned to listen and to speak on their behalf.”

Nick Whitaker

Arhag is equally delighted to welcome Nick Whitaker to the board as a non-executive member. Nick brings extensive professional expertise as a chartered accountant with a career spanning finance, audit, governance, and regulation.

Throughout his career, Nick has worked with large-scale organisations as well as the not-for-profit sector, including charities, membership organisations, and government bodies. His understanding of the unique challenges faced by social enterprises equips him to provide invaluable guidance to Arhag.

Since retiring from full-time work, Nick has dedicated himself to a range of non-executive roles, driven by his passion for creating a more inclusive and equitable society. His commitment to driving positive societal change aligns with Arhag’s vision of supporting migrants and refugees.

Nick said, “I’m very excited to accept this position with Arhag. The team itself is full of inspiring and dedicated individuals whose work has a tangible, positive impact on the people they support.”

Charmain and Nick’s appointments mark an exciting chapter for Arhag, and we look forward to seeing the contributions they will make in their new roles.
