In March 2014 Arhag made an application for Discretionary Housing Payment (DHP) on behalf of one of its residents who lives in Newham. This resident was affected by the bedroom tax and, as a result, housing benefit was not paying the full rent. DHP is a discretionary payment that local authorities can give out to households affected by the benefit changes, in order to top up a person’s housing benefit. Every resident affected by the bedroom tax and benefit cap can apply for DHP.
The resident was awarded DHP and Arhag received a payment of £1,615. This payment cleared all of the resident’s rent arrears which were caused by the Bedroom Tax. Every resident affected by the bedroom tax and benefit cap should apply for DHP. If you don’t apply for DHP you could be missing out on money which can go towards paying the shortfall of the rent.
If you were awarded DHP last year you might have to reapply this year.
